About Joyful Life
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:11
Kay Smith was prompted by a vision to start a women’s Bible study for young moms in a home near to the church. When the study began it met once a month. Within a year, it had grown so large that Kay decided to move it into the church’s fellowship hall. With Kay’s inspiration and Betty Willems’ enthusiasm and organizational abilities, a board was formed to oversee the studies, and the format was changed to once a week. In the late 70s, it was decided that the lessons should be published and the study was named Joyful Life Bible Class.
Kay, Betty, and Carolyn Lamb, whom Kay described as the “prayer powerhouse” of their team, partnered together and led the ministry. Betty fondly remembers their intimate, close-knit relationship that began in those early days.
Many women came and by 1980, the study had grown so large that it needed to be moved into the main sanctuary. Before long, 1,000 or more were attending. For workingwomen, a weekly evening class was formed. Over the years, the study has reached thousands more as the concept has spread across the country to other Calvary Chapels.
After 30 years, the Joyful Life studies are still going strong in Costa Mesa, across the nation, and around the world via the Internet. The torch has been passed down to others in many areas. Glenda Kaser has been heading up the study for the past twelve years and writes the lessons. Cheryl Brodersen, Kay’s daughter, has followed in her mother’s footsteps and is teaching each Friday, presenting thought-provoking lessons with her quick wit and transparent style.
God is continuing His work through Joyful Life—saving marriages, healing broken spirits, and birthing new ministries—and we pray He continues to do so until His soon return!
